HVR Energy receives funding from Spain’s Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to expand its hydrogen refuelling network

HVR Energy has secured European funding to advance INICIA, a project involving four new hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) at strategic locations along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), thereby accelerating the decarbonisation of heavy-duty transport.

HVR Energy, operador integrado líder en hidrógeno verde en España, ha sido beneficiario de la segunda convocatoria del Programa de Apoyo al Transporte Sostenible y Digital (PATSYD) aprobada por Orden Ministerial de 21 de octubre de 2024 y publicada en el Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE nº 258, de 25 de octubre). Esta iniciativa, en régimen de concurrencia competitiva, forma parte del Plan de Recuperación, Transformación y Resiliencia (PRTR), y está financiado por la Unión Europea – NextGenerationEU. 

The project, submitted under the name INICIA, has been awarded a grant of €712,796.19, representing approximately 38% of the €1.8 million in eligible costs.

HVR Energy’s INICIA project achieved the highest overall technical score among the 31 beneficiary companies, recognising its high level of maturity, impact, quality and relevance, as well as its alignment with the PRTR’s strategic objectives. The project involves the construction and commissioning of four hydrogen refuelling stations located along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), using existing facilities in Zaragoza, Madrid, Badajoz and Córdoba. This initiative represents a significant step forward in the decarbonisation of heavy-duty transport, a key sector in achieving the climate targets of both Spain and the European Union.

INICIA’s strategic solution stands out for its compact, modular and rapidly deployable design, occupying just 20 m² and requiring a minimum electrical capacity of 15 kW. The use of high-pressure compressed hydrogen reduces the need for on-site compression, minimising CAPEX, OPEX and the impact on existing infrastructure.

The PATSYD programme finances mature projects that promote the sustainability and digitalisation of transport, with an implementation deadline of 31 March 2026. Its objective is to encourage more efficient and environmentally responsible logistics by promoting lower-emission transport modes and integrating technological solutions. Transport accounts for approximately 27% of greenhouse gas emissions in Spain, making its transformation essential in the fight against climate change.

This funding award reinforces HVR Energy’s role as a key player in the energy transition. Following the commissioning of its facility in Coslada, Madrid, in 2023, the company continues to expand its infrastructure network with the support of European initiatives and funding programmes such as EIT Urban Mobility and CEF-T-2024-AFIFGEN. Through INICIA, HVR Energy is advancing the objectives of the PRTR while helping to consolidate Spain’s leadership in green hydrogen.
