HVR Energy and Q8 sign a Memorandum of Understanding to deploy hydrogen refuelling stations across Spain

13 August 2025

The first phase will prioritise two locations in Badajoz and Córdoba, where INICIA hydrogen refuelling stations are expected to be deployed before March 2026.

INICIA is a compact 350-bar solution designed for integration into existing service stations, helping to accelerate the achievement of the targets set out in Spain’s Hydrogen Roadmap.

HVR Energy and Q8 Energy Red have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the deployment of the INICIA hydrogen refuelling network at existing service stations in Spain. The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation aimed at accelerating the availability of renewable hydrogen along the country’s strategic transport corridors.

INICIA is HVR Energy’s hydrogen refuelling station model designed for rapid deployment, low installed power and a compact footprint, with hydrogen dispensing at 350 bar. This facilitates its operational integration into existing facilities and enables demand to be developed safely and efficiently. Its logistics model, based on receiving compressed hydrogen at approximately 500 bar or above, minimises on-site compression and storage requirements, optimising CAPEX and OPEX while contributing to Spain’s hydrogen targets.

The MoU establishes an initial phase involving the deployment of up to two stations before March 2026, with Badajoz and Córdoba identified as priority locations. HVR Energy will be responsible for installation, commissioning and maintenance, as well as hydrogen supply, while Q8 will manage sales to end customers.

The scope of the collaboration includes regular consultations and joint planning, together with shared initiatives to promote hydrogen and support R&D&I projects related to the infrastructure. Following this initial phase, both companies will explore further deployment opportunities across the service station network.

With Q8, we are taking a decisive step towards bringing hydrogen directly to service stations. INICIA enables us to begin quickly at 350 bar with a competitive solution that reduces barriers and accelerates real adoption among fleets and operators,” said Santiago Ramas, Managing Director of HVR Energy.

For Q8, hydrogen is a key energy carrier in the energy transition. This collaboration with HVR Energy enables us to offer tangible solutions to our customers and make progress in the decarbonisation of transport in Spain,” said Abdullah Al Roumi, Retail Manager at Q8 Energy Red, S.L.

Through this agreement, HVR Energy and Q8 are launching a joint plan beginning with the first locations and their operational integration. The results of this phase will guide the expansion of the network to additional sites, bringing hydrogen closer to the priority corridors of the TEN-T network.
