HVR Energy completes a landmark hydrogen mobility journey between Madrid and Barcelona
03 November 2025
HVR Energy has successfully completed the journey from Madrid to Barcelona aboard BMW Group’s hydrogen-powered BMW iX5. Today, we have not only reached Barcelona: we have paved the way. Kilometre by kilometre, refuelling stop by refuelling stop, we have demonstrated that hydrogen works here and now when industry, operators and technology move in the same direction. This achievement is energy in motion, as well as a clear message: when we join forces, the future accelerates.
The journey began in Madrid with the first 700-bar refuelling stop at the Scale Green Energy (Enagás) station, a benchmark for the real-world operation of hydrogen at service stations. From there, the team travelled to Zaragoza to visit Grupo Zoilo Ríos and refuel at “El Cisne”, Repsol’s hydrogen refuelling station, an iconic facility driving the energy transition through the day-to-day operation of an existing service station. The next stop was the Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón, where the vehicle was refuelled at 700 bar at a centre recognised across Europe for its technological expertise and collaborative approach.
The arrival in Barcelona had a distinctly local character: EVARM accompanied the team on the final leg of the journey to the Iberdrola refuelling station, the final destination of the route and the prelude to the Smart City Expo World Congress. HVR Energy attended the event alongside EIT Urban Mobility to share lessons learned and bring new partners into the deployment of hydrogen infrastructure.
“This journey represents what we believe in: that the energy transition is built on the road, by stopping at real service stations and joining forces. Each refuelling stop has been a small step towards demonstrating that, when industry works together, hydrogen becomes a reality,” said Santiago Ramas, Mananging director of HVR Energy.
Beyond the technical milestone, the route sought to highlight what truly matters: people, cooperation and purpose. One person may arrive sooner alone, but together we will always go further. HVR Energy would like to thank Scale Green Energy (Enagás), Grupo Zoilo Ríos, Repsol (El Cisne), Fundación Hidrógeno Aragón, EVARM and Iberdrola for their involvement and hospitality, as well as BMW Group and EIT Urban Mobility for their support throughout the journey.
Through this initiative, HVR Energy reaffirms its mission: to bring hydrogen to service stations through solutions designed for real-world deployment and to build a network that enables fleets and users to transition to zero-emission mobility.
